Fodors (http://www.fodors.com) and Frommers (http://www.frommers.com). The online versions of the commercial Fodors and Frommers travel guides. These can be useful for some kinds of research (geography, places to visit, natural and manmade wonders, some pictures and maps) as long as you keep in mind that they are commercial sites promoting tourism.  Origin: C. Type: D. Audience: A.

From the Library of Congress, Portals to the World contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations and other areas of the world. The links were selected by Area Specialists and other Library staff using Library of Congress selection criteria. Origin: G. Type: L. Audience: A.

City Data (http://www.city-data.com/). Extensive data on virtually every American city, even the very small. Population, climate, extensive demographics, maps, impressive array of other information. Note that this is a commerical site, so the ads may be distracting. Also, the source and dates for the data is not documented. Origin: C. Type: D. Audience: A.

NetState (http://www.netstate.com/). Similar to City Data but covering the 50 states, a commercial site with the same cautions about ads and the lack of documentation of source. Extensive data. Has printable versions of state flags, animals and plants and others, but some of these must be accessed from the links at the bottom of the home page rather than from the individual state listing. Origin: C. Type: D. Audience: A.
